Phi Lambda Beta is a national Portuguese honor society that recognizes and highlights merit in the study of the language, literature, and cultures of the Portuguese-speaking community of students in the United States. The Spelman chapter Sigma Upsilon of Phi Lambda Beta was installed in 2023.
Members consist of college students who have demonstrated excellence in Portuguese language and related subjects during their academic pursuits. Honorary members include Portuguese professors and individuals who have exhibited dedication to Portuguese-speaking cultures or have excelled in promoting exchange between American and Portuguese-speaking communities.
Students are nominated by Dr. Fernanda Guida based on the criteria below:
Completed 100- and 200-level courses (or equivalent)
Completed one 300-level course (or equivalent)
Either completed or in the process of completing a second 300-level course (or equivalent)
0 GPA in Portuguese courses and a 3.0 CGPA
Indication of active and continuing interest in the study of Portuguese and Lusophone Cultures
Junior standing or above
